The 2009 Harvest has officially begun at the winery! It is incredibly exciting to be at the winery – my senses are experiencing the delight of harvest, the rich smell of grapes drenching the air as warm sunshine beats down into the vineyards. The white varietals will be picked first, allowing the red varietals to continue to ripen, until Winemaker Wade Stark determines the sugars are ideal in making our big red wines.
It has taken months of hard work to get the vineyards ready for crush, beginning with bud break, ending with verasion and then patiently waiting for the grapes to ripen until the perfect balance of sugar and acidity is found and the moment is right for the grapes to be harvested. A couple weeks ago, Wade was out in the vineyard checking on the vineyards just after verasion took place. Check out the video on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDy2CYGnFL8.
